Kai Cenat has officially etched his name into Twitch and livestreaming history. On September 28, 2025, the Bronx-born streamer became the first person ever to surpass one million active subscribers on the platform during his Mafiathon 3 stream, which has been full of celebrity guests, chaotic antics, and nonstop entertainment.
The milestone cements him as the face of modern livestreaming, but his journey began long before he was on Twitch. For Cenat, this achievement has been the culmination of years of hard work, persistence, and a relentless drive to entertain that started with YouTube pranks, skits, and reaction videos.
How Did Kai Cenat Become the Biggest Streamer in the World?

Born in 2001, Cenat grew up in New York in a single-parent household that faced its share of challenges. Early on, he found inspiration online from viral videos before producing his own comedic skits on Facebook. By 2018, he had taken a leap onto YouTube, launching a channel that would set the foundation for his career.
On YouTube, Cenat leaned heavily into prank videos, challenges, and exaggerated reaction content. His raw humor and unpredictable antics quickly caught on with Gen Z viewers, who connected with his authenticity. Joining the Bronx-based group AMP (Any Means Possible) alongside Fanum and Duke Dennis further expanded his reach.
Cenat’s real breakthrough came in 2021, when he shifted focus to Twitch. Initially known for YouTube pranks and skits, he used Twitch’s interactivity to reinvent himself. At first glance, the platform was known mostly for gaming, but Cenat redefined its boundaries. His streams were a mix of comedy, improv, interviews, and occasional chaos.
By 2022, celebrities like Lil Baby and 21 Savage were joining him on streams. What you may have once seen only on late-night talk shows now happened live on Cenat’s channel. His 2024 sleepover stream with Kevin Hart and Druski drew over 700,000 concurrent viewers, and it was then that we knew that he could entertain audiences on the same scale as television events.
But the first step he had to take on Twitch was to become a gamer, and that is exactly what he did.
How Video Games Contributed to Kai Cenat’s Rise

While Cenat’s comedy and pranks gave him a foundation, video games helped him transition into streaming superstardom. When he moved to Twitch in 2021, the platform was still heavily associated with gaming. Kai understood that aspect of it, but decided to bend the rules to his personality.
Soon, his streams were a mix of gameplay, challenges, skits, and guest appearances, creating an interactive variety show. While he played titles like GTA V and Call of Duty, his streams were never just about the gameplay. Viewers tuned in for the games but stayed for Kai’s personality, and Twitch’s interactive format with chat only amplified his growth.
The overlap between gaming culture and internet celebrity became his sweet spot, and Twitch gave him the freedom to scale it. One of the biggest events of the gaming side of his streams was the Elden Ring marathon that he did last year. His first foray into FromSoftware’s Soulsborne title drew in tens of thousands, and he took that momentum and ran with it.
Kai Cenat’s story is bigger than subscriber counts or celebrity cameos. As of the end of September 2025, he hit the impossible milestone: one million active Twitch subscribers. And he’s using his success for more than personal gain. As part of Mafiathon 3, Kai announced plans to build a new school in Nigeria.
It just goes to show how a Bronx kid who started with Facebook skits now has the reach to influence lives globally. And his story is only just beginning.
